Are Voters Smart Enough for a Democracy?

More and more we are seeing TV commentators interview voters leaving the polls.  They ask them some simple questions about their candidates positions or the Government Structure (how many Supreme Court Justices are there?) and the people get over 80% wrong.  While the concept of a Democracty is certainly exciting, I'm not sure that it is appropriate in a society that has dumbed down the Public School Curriculae and has an Entertainment Industry that continuouslty shows abberant behavior as if it was normal.

Our President Elect was the only Legislator in Illinois who actively opposed a Bill that would have made the killing of bnbies who were born alive during an abortion illegal.  This on top of his associations with his pastor, Ayers, Rezco etc. raise many questions about his morals and decision making.  Our VP has been shown to have Plagerized in College and in a Public Speech.  Our Secretary of State has been tainted by years of scandal in her husbands administration, took over a year to produce the  work  papers on Whitewater and during the campign out and out lied about having to dodge sniper fire in an airport in Bosnia.  The new attorney general went around the Justice Department System to pardon Marc Rich and the beat goes on.   "Change we can Believe In - yeah right"!

I'm not suggesting that it is much better in the other party.  As Alexis de Tocqueville said, "There are many men of principle in both parties in America, but there is no party of principle.

So, my first question for this blog is "how can we do a better job of educating the public so that they will take the time to research the issues and vote with some intelligence".  Or, is it too late for that.
